Time Capsule Challenge: 1984 in Books

Today is my birthday (happy birthday to me!), and in celebration of my thirty fourth year on this Earth I have decided to embark on a challenge to read the best selling books of 1984. Social issues, political climate, and other factors influence entertainment today, and in this way books are time capsules for the collective past.

What was the world like in 1984?

Ronald Regan was President of the United States, the AIDS virus is identified, the Winter Olympics were held in Los Angeles, the US was in a recession, the original Apple Macintosh personal computer went on sale for the first time, the UK and China agree to revert Hong Kong in 1997... and much more.

At minimum I want to read all of the NYT bestsellers (even that Danielle Steel book, I suppose).  I will keep this post updated with links to the full reviews as they are completed.

Welcome to my literary world of wonder!

I have always found comfort in a good book, the feel and smell of the pages as I turn them, engrossed in a tale woven by a complete stranger. 

Well written books (of any genre, really) can transport you to a new place and teach you things about not only yourself but the world around you... And that is what I love about reading: the expansion of my horizons, of going on an adventure from the comfort of my own home. 

Who am I?

My name is Kaleena, and I'm a thirty-something California girl who unwinds by reading. Recently I found a great pleasure in writing reviews on Goodreads (I think it taps into my Liberal Arts training for writing papers), and I thought that I would venture out into the World of the Internet to share my thoughts. 

What will you find here?

My goal is to post once per week and to start they will likely be reviews, lists, or recommendations. I plan to expand post content as my blog grows.

How about genres? 

I read a wide array of book types, but my favorite are Literary fiction, philosophy, historical fiction, science fiction, and fantasy. I particularly enjoy novels that delve into themes that examine human nature in some way, particularly through a philosophical or religious lens.
